Typical Stuff In The Shop #9: Wine Cooler Frame

This is part 9 in a 16 part series: Typical Stuff In The Shop

The Tavern where I did some previous work,  wanted to make their wine cooler look a little more built in. Here it is.

They wanted me to remove the 5" panel at the top
and to cover over the black laminate panel, but have cut outs for the digital readouts.
They also wanted a frame to cover the sides and a removable kick at the bottom.
Here is what I did.

(Previously posted)
It's kicking my butt, for something so simple.
When I was edge banding the bottom edge, I didn't take into account the little register roller that rides along the top,
(it registers the beginning and end of the panel) and sends a signal for the guillotine to cut banding flush with the front and back ends. Unfortunately, the wheel registered on every slot and tried to dig holes into the walnut panel.

@ approx. 180 bucks a sheet for walnut,
I wasn't going to go buy another sheet.
So I cut the damaged part off the panel and glued on a new piece (that I edge banned before hand.)

Unfortunately,  (for various reasons/excuses), I didn't get the parts flush enough and when I was sanding it was too much to take off without sanding through the veneer.  So,  off to get a new sheet.... Nope,
cut that bad part off again and started over with adding the new strip.
And here it is in the picture.  All looks good and I think there will be no problems sanding tomorrow.

Lately it seems like I make more mistakes on the easy stuff. I guess I'm not giving it as much attention as I need to.
I have to try harder.

Here is a rough SU of the whole frame.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Think it’s more difficult than it seems at first. More involved than a few boards

The work itself wasn't so bad. The hard part is fitting to what they have.
Walls tapered in at the bottom 3/8"
Ceiling line was 1/4 out of level.
Measuring the cut outs to match the black laminate panel;  the panel wasn't mounted on the cooler, was just sort of sitting in place and the cooler wasn't centered in the hole.
Lots of little adjustments that you don't see in order to make it all line up.  Pretty normal stuff I guess.

I don't think the slots at the bottom are enough to let the air in,  but I said my piece,  so it won't be my fault when I have to remake the kick or at least add more slots. There is a nice fan at the top to draw in the air,  we'll see.

Lots of variables to deal with. I can see them over heating. They produce a lot of heat.
Variables or not, looks good.   Does look much more built in.

Been there...
Too busy worrying about the big dog....and it's the little one that bites you in the ass...twice.
Looks good. You'd never know you got bit...

Excellent work!
