Before I can apply finished, I need to take care of a couple things - address the gap in the hub veneer and plug the holes in the end of the spikes.
I filled the gap with a sliver of veneer. There's no mistaking it for a repair, but it looks better than a gap. As I mentioned before, the seam is under the spike at the 12 o'clock position, which won't be visible to most observers.
Glued-in and sanded flush.
Fully sanded and ready for finish.
For the holes at the end of the spikes, I cut some short 7/64" end grain plugs from a scrap of cherry.
After gluing a plug in each hole, I used the spike radius jig again (with pivot bracket removed) to hold the spikes while I sanded the plugs flush.
The plugs shouldn't be too visible once they're finished.
Next, I'll get the spikes fully sanded and ready for finish.
