A Pair of Side Tables #9: This is the End.

This is part 9 in a 9 part series: A Pair of Side Tables

Apologies to the Doors!

Finally the finish has been sprayed.
Base coat is Mohawk vinyl sealer, top coat satin pre-cat lacquer.

Previously I decided to assemble the legs before applying the finish since the exposed tenon had to pass through the mortise.
High probability of scuffing up the tenon.

Spraying after assembly made getting good coats without the overspray difficult. Between coat scuffing was also a PITA.
I could have dealt with fixing some scuffs on 1/4" of tenon and been a happier camper.

Design is from looking through a ton of pictures and finding something simple where I could concentrate on other aspects.

Anyway, my goal with these tables was to make something bigger than a box and explore some more QSWO finishing  techniques.
I'm happy with the finishing, really learned that super careful selection of woods with the same flecking is important.
These tables have two styles, a kind of tiger striping and some of the blotch flecks.

The colors shift dramatically depending on the light angle.

I don't have a good place to photograph items this large and no motivation to create one, so just a few shots of some of the details.

Top is 18" diameter, legs 1-1/2" square, 21" tall overall

Cross lapped lower support, might be a good place for a small plant

Through tenons, pinned and plugged.

Thanks for following along!

They really turned out great! Thanks for the blog.
Those are very cool Splint!  I love the way the grain has popped with the various tones!  Well done and great blog....

AGREE WITH THE OTHERS, GREAT BUILD, VERY VERY GOOD LOOKING.

Ron

Thanks fellows!

Next time I need some better and consistent grain, I'll dip into my stash of QSWO veneer over the same oak. That way the fuming will keep all the exposed end grain at a similar tone.
Wow! The work is stunning!! Your exposed tenons and plugs reminds me of the Greene and Greene furniture technique. Nice work.
beautiful tables splint. love the G&G elements. well done.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Thanks!
Next time it'll be Dominos and fake through tenons 🤠
Nice.  A great project all the way around.

Cool Blog Splint, nice job as usual. I still can't believe the dooshbaggers over there banned you?? Simply amazing.
Thanks Nathan 👍

George, I got bored so I started poking! I'd post some hopefully helpful stuff now and then, but the place is really a sewer now.
Great project and results, Splinter.  I wholly enjoyed following along.

Nice summary/conclusion to a great/detailed blog Splinter.

To appease the title (titles sell books), you should have called them "End Tables".

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thanks for posting the blog! Great job…

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".
