Shop storage #5: Small parts organizer

This is part 5 in a 6 part series: Shop storage

Just a quick and dirty project to use up some smalls and keep this organized when I’m doing something like this morning’s bench glue-up. There were eight leg tenons, and each one had four accent pieces on each of the four sizes of it, plus a wedge to hold it all together.

The tray is made of walnut, canarywood, and oak. The squares are a little under 2” square, and the holes were created in the lathe, chucking each square up, and making the hollow with a scraper. Took longer for the glue to dry than to cut and turn all the pieces.

May you have the day you deserve!

That’s a great bench piece. I use the plastic shells from vacuum packed lightbulbs for the same thing. Kinda bowl shaped and they hold bits and bobs well enough, but not nearly as nice as yours! Think I might have to copy that. Nicely done.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Pretty cool, Dave!!

Cool looking Dave. I've used muffin tins in the past, but the bowl shape certainly is easier to get stuff out!
Thanks, guys. Was posted for folks to copy. Sometimes I have a good idea, and this one earned the time back when the glue-up went… a little bit sideways. No major problems, but without the organizer, I probably would have had a mess.

May you have the day you deserve!

Interesting idea .....if it were so simple to get me organized...LOL

Those plastic trays that bulk batteries from Costco come in work well too.
It took a minute for my brain to realize that these were dishes and not domes.  A good idea.  I often use Harbor Freight magnetic trays for this.  I have several of them  that I picked up for a couple of bucks when HF advertised them as a loss leader.

Thanks! This was stuff already in the shop, which always feels nice. I have a new toy in the shop, and didn’t even spend any of my beer money on it.

May you have the day you deserve!
