Craftisian Labs #7: Fully Interactive SketchUp Model Embeds

Craftisian magic embeds got even more powerful. In addition to automatically turning a copy-pasted Youtube, Vimeo and Craftisian project link into a rich embed, CS will now also convert any link of the model from the SketchUp 3D Warehouse into a fully interactive experience directly on Craftisian.

All you have to do is to locate the model page on the 3D Warehouse and copy the link from the browser address bar:

Next, you have to just paste it into the CS text editor and voila... it will be recognized and converted into the model placeholder graphic informing you that the model will be displayed properly once saved.

Save it and the interactive model viewer will be ready for your readers (note that one has to first click on the "Click for 3D Model Viewer" to make it interactive - that's how it's designed by the 3D Warehouse team):

Enjoy!

Fantastic addition, Martin. Thanks!
I like it.
Awesome Martin,
Thanks

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

Awesome addition Martin.

Thanks as always Martin.

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

People don't need to be a whiz at SketchUp to appreciate it's usefulness.  All one needs to do is come to grips with the orbit ("O" rotate image) and the pan ("H" move image) commands to  get a better perspective than just a 2D image... rotaing a model can give you views and/or reveal concepts that may inspire others to incorporate new ideas into their project... mastering/learning SketchUp is not a necessity to appreciate it's usefulness.

For the noobs... in these windows...
  • Click on the image to open SketchUp model.
  • Press and hold the left mouse button and move the mouse around to rotate.
  •  Press and hold the left mouse button and the Left Shift key and move the mouse to move the focal point around.
The other buttons can simply be "ignored" for disinterested people.

Though, the

button lets you select scenes if the author has set them up.

So how do I make that work on a tablet Duckie?

Well, that's cool.  I definitely use Sketchup in most of my projects, though I am not sure that they will let me put them in the 3D warehouse since I am still using the deprecated 2017 version.  I am slowly moving to OnShape because it is less frustrating and much more powerful.

I still use 2018... have license for 2021 (refuse to go subscription) as the upgrades didn't offer any need/must have options.
The 3D warehouse will accept old versioned model, however, they have to be uploaded through their internet link... and downloaded using Collada files that are unzipped and imported into an open SU model.

I think that to view on a phone or tablet you might need to use the view in AR option.  Which you can see in the 3D warehouse page of the design.  That gives you a QR code that can be scanned with a phone to open a new browser tab that allows you to view the 3D model but I am not sure how to use that in this context.  Here is an example of a QR code.

Just trying the embed to see how it works.

I added that last item from my desktop PC but it works fine  to view on my iPad.

Alright. That’s kinda cool…

Good point about the Scenes icon, LBD. I make extensive use of scenes in my models to simulate sheets and depict alternate views (exploded views, detail views, etc.)

It’s too bad the viewer doesn’t the tags/layers toggles. Using them can really let you gain insight into models, particularly complex ones.
I hate internet based apps..., however, this is a great way to showcase the model and allow non-SkethUp audience a glimpse.  Great to be able to see 360°.
