It's A Boy!!

We had the first Monarch emerge from the chrysalis today and set it free.  It was a boy!!  It flew up over the trees and away.  We have 8 more chrysalis and two big caterpillars left.  It is a thrill to see them go.

Look for an oval shaped dot on the back area of the wings.  They have pheromones to attract females.
helping nature thrive, it's a beautiful thing !

The clues are there, just not as obvious for Monarchs as it is for people!

Birdseye, did you get those photos while it was drying it's wings or was it just posing as a way to say thanks?
Its wings were dry and ready to fly off.  We opened the cage and it flapped a couple times and was off.  It is about time for them to start the migration to Mexico.

We really enjoy doing this each year.  It is a treasure hunt to find the caterpillars and then watch them eat milkweed and grow.

Yanks are OK with guns, but they shy from wood...

BOY?   In political correctness, that slug was before the change!

You really need to get some tags.  Are you in the Eastern or Western range?  I think that these are just for the Eastern range.  It looks like you can even purchase rearing kits that include larvae.
