Anyone ever work with Teak? I got a whole stack of 1" x 3" x 5'. Stuff is very dense and hard. It had a stain on it and found It's a pain to run through my thickness planer. It's heavy too. I understand some 60% of its weight is natural oil.
Any ideas what to make with it?

Outdoor furniture is common. That or a boat🙂
yep what steve said. all my outdoor furniture is made from ipe which is a pita to work with.

I’ve got ipe decks I put in. Wears great, but dense as hell. I think it would be hard on blades

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

I made a box for Kleenex with some.

Here's an interesting article comparing Ipe and Teak

I believe it to be thought of as the King and Queen of outdoor woods. I would love to have your dilemma.
Sorry, never worked with Teak.
Years ago kept a sailboat in  saltwater slip in Fl.    All exterior wood was teak.   Vaguely remember cleaning and oiling the teak.   Made it look.good for a few months, then do it again.
If I remember teak has some grit (sand?) in it making it abrasive to saw blades and other tools.    Only made a very few replacement parts to deck hardware mounts and such.  Not much help to your query.

yes teak has a lot of silica in it. hard on blades.

What's hard on the blades is done 60% + natural oil in it as well as silica. I had better luck hand planing with my Lee Valley Jack plane than my thickness planer. And yes...I have to sharpen my plane blade now. Bummer!
ive never had nor will i ever have a desire to work with teak ! i used ipe a lot because i worked for a lumber yrad and got a lot of ipe for free 🤑 so yeah it was worth the extra. but ill say, every spring i sand the tables and re oil and the wood looks like brand new again. and ive never had a termite attempt it yet ! 😁

Working with Ipe is one step away from working with concrete.
Corelz you're right!  It's close! Ipe is significantly harder than teak. It has a Janka hardness rating of 3,680, while teak has a rating of 1,050. Almost four times harder. Might as well woodwork with a jack hammer!!
yeah rick your preachin to the choir bud. look at the opening pics on pottz patio. those tables are all ipe !
