Yeah, Gunny at one point was considering moving over there, didn't sound like the move was impending but rather a future option.  Given the situation over there, I would suspect there's a better chance of family coming to see (or live with) he and his wife.

Topa sure sounds like he was having a rough go, I hope there was a definitive diagnosis and he's enduring successful treatment now, as wishful as that might be, I suspect the truth is more dire.
yeah thanks yeti ! as you know many good friends are posting one day and never again. most just dont wanna admit tomorrow will never come i guess ! ill do my best, not for your sake but so i can see all the shit yall talk about me one last time !!!!!

I seem to recall that someone from here was able to get a message to Topa - not sure when. His health was not the best at that time.
If we are talking about the same Jason, I stopped see his post quite awhile ago when we are on the other site.
We could use this forum topic to recount tales of our lost frinds.

There are times in your life when it’s OK to accept help or accept a gift, I believe. Many times when we grow we are temporarily poor.

“House-poor” after purchasing a house.

Short on income after the birth of a new child.

Tightening a belt when launching a new business, product, or venture.

I can’t recall exactly what had me down that year (I think it was the birth of our child) but things were grim and it was looking like a ramen birthday. All sorts of things got vetoed by the accountant (spouse).

Gunny stood up and for whatever reason said, you know what? That’s not cool, and I’m going to buy you that leather Apron you had on your birthday wishlist that you were talking about.

I was still building my shop at that time, very carefully purchasing each stupid little thing like life depended on it. Finding just the right German horsehair brush for sweeping away shavings, for example. Locating the real grain leather apron from traditional hand workers in Ecuador that made chisel rolls and sundry leather goods. None of these things were too terribly expensive but they were chosen to last a life-time.

I believe Gunny or another lumber jock at the time ended up buying the same apron and was not as impressed as I was with it (stating clearly and objectively that the front pockets had a tendency to fill with dust), but I like to think that Gunny knew what I was doing. I hand-selected legacy-quality goods at-cost on-budget from craftsman to build from the ground up.

Regardless of whether he is with us still or not, I won’t put words in his mouth or cogitate on motivations, but I must recount how he stood up and helped me in a time that was very influential. I still use that apron (it is in-fact a very heavy and thick leather that one can pass down for 100+ years, easily with little care), and hope that my son will grow into it and appreciate it as I do, even though he will never have been able to meet Gunny.

I am saddened I may never get the chance to thank him in-person, and so these words and the memories may have to suffice. They are beautiful memories though, as they are born of comradery in craft and fellowship in support.
well said dev. 😔

Pretty easy to figure out who, simply based on output, and stated info. Not to mention location.

I didn't know Gunny or Topa well, but both were very active on Larry's patio thread, and I never heard a bad word about either. I'm chuckling, that cannot be said about everyone from back there. Times change though, and I suppose perspective does too.

Dev, that was the most kind thing I've ever read on a woodworking thread. I guess I'm a great believer that some day all of us will have a round 2, and you will get a chance to say your thanks face to face.
i didn't tell petey here because i dont think he wanted most to know. ill leave that up to him to reveal if he wants.

Bob was here but didn’t take the time to understand how this site works
yeah know him well. i tried to help him understand this place but he just got discouraged and gave up. this place isn't that complicated. petey maybe see if you can get him to come back. that bench took forever, glad he got it done finally.

just went and found it. thats one hell of a bench ! i looked at some of the projects and it's sad how little or some many have no comments. bobs bench had a lot compared and he only had about 8 or so. 78k members and thats all they get. probably because all the guys that did most of the commenting are all here now. i question that member count.
