VERITAS hand planes

well after buying a couple planes from their seconds sale i thought id give my opinion on them. the quality is top notch all the way. they come out of the box ready to use, although im sure many of you would still wanna give a little more fine tuning. this year i bought their scraping plane that i missed out on last year. works very well as is. a great tool for those with hand issues. also bought their right hand iron edge trim plane. it's a pull not push type. last year at the sale i got their #6 fore plane. it is 18"x 2-3/8 with an adjustable mouth opening. also have their large router plane with a full set of blades. they do offer a storage box but i made my own which i posted as a project. i also have their cabinet makers trimming plane, great for getting into tight spots. and finally their convex minature palm plane. besides the planes they have a full line of blades in 3 steel types, knobs, totes and other parts you may need.

these planes arnt cheap but quality never is. if you want one id say keep an eye out for their seconds sale and you can save some good money. and to also help buy their 10% off gift cards and combine to save even more. the ones ive bought had only minor blemishes that have no effect on performance. but shop early because they go fast.

I have almost all those. I used to sell them at Lee Valley.
Top notch all the way and the second sales are great. There's like no blemishes. Hardly visible. It's like they are new.
I have been wanting their No 6 fore plane for a very long time — just haven’t had the need since getting a Stanley No 6C which pulls its weight very well. One day I will spring for that Veritas No 6. I don’t like their Custom line of planes, I like the regular old bench planes like that one there. Though I do like to try and get Bubinga handles smuggled over the border whenever I can.

The right angle edge plane is a real handy fellow to have when you don’t want to bust out the shooting board to shoot some end grain. The skew on the blade makes short work of end grain smoothing. You are correct to pull it rather than push it — both work, but pulling it I find to be much easier. If ever you have a hard time adjusting the lateral on it, use the grub screws to your advantage — snug both screws up to the blade, back off the side you want to pivot to, then use the opposing screw to push the blade laterally. It works wonderfully to micro-adjust the lateral on that guy to take the perfect shaving.
yeah i had a hard time finding the blemishes on both. the fore plane only had one tiny one on the sole which hurts nothing. shows how much they care about the quality as many companies would let them go out as is !

yeah dev i already checked out the adjustments on that edge plane. it was set perfectly though from the factory.

Huh. I bought mine from the Lee Valley store in-person and the blade did not come installed. Your blade came pre-installed? Fascinating!
no sorry the blade was in a envelope ! the only plane ive bought where the blade was separate ?

A #6 plane hmm. Look who's racing out of the hand plane closet. That's an impressive herd you have there. I don't even have half of those planes
yeah i lie a lot 🤣 thats only half of my herd though ! shhhhhhhh !

They look straight out of a glass display cabinet.

Quickly put them back or you'll get some of that bloody sawdust on them... oriented the right way and you can hide those unsightly chips... and keep the cabinet keys hidden.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

duckie...........i already do !!!!! do you think i use em ? 🤣

Pottz,
Very nice set of quality tools, it doesn't get any better than this.
I have the Veritas scraping plane, bought it during a frustation exercise on a project where I was having trouble planing a smooth finish. Turned out to be a good deal for me, this plane works great at handling gnarly grain, and leaving a pretty nice surface. Enjoy your new toys.
totally agree OT ! scrapers can be hard for older people with arthritis, and this tool makes it easy.

Good tools are precious metal. Said the guy with a huge, full, SnapOn toolbox, full of SnapOn tools. In a town where big, full SnapOn toolboxes are for sale everywhere.    Spoiler Alert, Harbor Freight kicked American tool makers ass.
Money is usually the driver in decisions like buying tools, as well as the satisfaction. I've never used a quality, expensive tool that I bought ,wishing I had used a crappy cheapo.
Those are some fine looking tools, and I'm a tool guy. I have antiques of some of what you have, in a box somewhere. And I'm still bringing shit home.

Hey, you don't know me, but you don't like me ... Buck Owens

I’m way behind and late wow buddy nicely done
I want to buy he router one of these days
never to late august. their router plane is the best imho. you can buy it with a box but i made my own. it's usually on sale during their seconds sales, but ya gotta get on fast because those usually go quick.
