End grain cutting bowl

I eventually completed the companion piece for this.

I bought the ulu from Ezina Designs. If I need another, I know where to go. It came with nice leather belt pouch.

The only ulu bowls that I saw had a bigger hole. I made a stand in for the ulu to check the size while turning.
I wanted a bowl to fit the ulu.    6" ulu, 6 1/4" bowl.

I did buy the big Robert Sorby scraper, 1 and 1/2" wide x 3/8" thick. I sharpened each side to 40 degrees. It cuts wonderfully. The inside of the bowl is as smooth as a baby's bottom. I've seen sets, an inside and an outside. The way I sharpened this, it will do both.

I glued up some mdf the same size as the workpiece. That really came in handy when I cut the slot for the blade.

I set it up with the mdf and used a 7" circular saw blade. I learned all I needed to know from the mdf. I made the first cut, moved the fence 1/16", and made the second cut. Worked great first time.

I used my big donut chuck to hold the bowl while turning. I made several different hole sizes. It's 3/4" bb ply
The base has a faceplate attached. It also has crosshairs on the other side, that's my branding jig. I like to center my maker's mark when I can.
I kept it low speed, 500 - 600 rpm range.

I also made a pestle from the scraps.

12" x 12" x 2 and 1/2" thick.  Walnut and maple. Howard Butcher Block Conditioner

Fantastic looking cutting bowl!   The end grain maple looks like it’s glowing.
I had to look up ulu.  This board/bowl has a really interesting 3D look.  Nice!
Board is fantastic, the way you dished it is first class (now I wish I had a lathe)

The clamping for the lathe is another neat idea!
Thank you all!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

It's only money.  I'm sure you would surprise us with what can be done on a lathe.

Money, yes, but more so it's lack of space. Could take over the sun room maybe 🤔

Last time I used a lathe was JHS shop. Love it! When I first met the spousal unit, she bought me a set of Delta lathe tools with a picture of "The Norm" on front. Would love to use them some day!
