Cottonwood bowl

This is a bowl I made from a very large cottonwood my dad cut down about two years ago. I turned it to about 65% complete and let it sit for a little over a year in the shop. I did wrap it in paper to slow the drying.
I was really surprised at the look of this when put first coat of an oil based polyurethane. It really popped. I was thinking it would be a pretty plain wood.

I did have an issue with the finish on it. I wound up sanding it down to bare wood. I was glad I did because I got rid of a lot of imperfections that I had left the first sanding.
I wound up thinning the poly with some denatured alcohol which seemed to help.

So here is the finished product. It is 12-1/4” wide by 5-1/4” tall.

Hope you like it!!

turned out real nice buck, love the shape. i knew no one would guess the wood. i would have never considered cottonwood as something youd turn.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Great patterns inside of it. Nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks bud! I only did it because my dad asked if I wanted to try it. I don’t think I would have otherwise. I will be turning some more.
You are right, I do like it!

I've made stuff with cotton wood before, but never any turnings.

I have had a few CWs die in the yard and cut them up for firewood, but if you have ever tried to split that stuff you know how impossible it is.

You made a fine show piece 👍
Nice looking bowl. It’s no candy dish either. Nice and big
Really nice bowl,  Cottonwood I would never have guessed either,  had no idea.    Have seen an old bar top made from a large Cottonwood Slab out in West Texas.     The shape of the bowl is interesting and looks great.   Well done.

We’ll do brisket and pork shoulder when you visit the patio!
Nice bowl. You took on a real challenge in my opinion. Soft wood like CW is really difficult to turn without a lot of tear out.

A good finish that will help harden the soft wood is salad bowl finish from General or Behlen's. They apply easily with a scrap piece of lint free cloth (old T shirt) and the final finish is very durable.
I usually have some gf brand stuff but ran out a while back.  It was a lot of sanding.

Thanks!
Nice bowl! The wood is a surprise - looks great!
Some nice bling in that wood, looks great.
That bowl came out nice Buck. I'm kinda surprised that cottonwood turned that pretty.

"Duck and Bob would be out doin some farming with funny hats on." chrisstef

I’m in the same boat Duck. Thank you!
Nice bowl, Buck. One thing I like to do when I rough out a bowl is to put it in a bucket with the chips I cut out of it and let it "move" or "normalize" that way.
