Black Acrylic Glitter Pen with Black Box

I finished the juniper pen and pencil set a week ago, and just now finished this black acrylic pen with box.

The pen body is a black acrylic resin with glitter in it. I went back and forth on whether I should paint the brass pen tube black before putting on the blank, but in the end, decided to leave it natural and showing through on the ends. The box is oak I stained black using an iron acetate solution, sanded back just enough so some of the natural grain would show through, and then grain-filled and finished with multiple coats of varnish oil. Elapsed time was almost ten days, but most days were just a few minutes of rubbing back the previous coat of oil with steel wool, then applying another coat and waiting overnight for it to cure.

I think it’s a nice addition and figure even if someone receives this as “second prize,” they’ll still be happy with it.

May you have the day you deserve!

Thanks, guys. I think the next one I’ll black the pen tube first. Luckily these (expensive) sparkly glitter blanks are long enough to make two pens from one blank, as long as I cut them in half accurately.

Fantastic gift set, both pen and box are great.
nice pen and box.   Black is really nice.

Very nice pen and box.  I kinda miss pen making.  I kinda took over my life several years back. Great hobby and you did a great job on this one.
Thanks all! The pens themselves go quick, but the box and associated bits took a while, but as I said above, this fall we’ve had a lot of projects out and about in the yard that have fragmented my shop time, so these little projects worked pretty well for the time I had.

Dave,  Very nice.  The metallic is subtle but does show through, probably show up much better in person.

Sharp looking, good job.
Yeah, Dave. It’s a tricky one to photograph, and I didn’t bother to bust out the fancy camera, since I’m giving it away. Maybe the one I make with the second half of the blank.

Thanks Mike.

May you have the day you deserve!

Def looks like something to write home about

I think Allen Webber would love it. 😉

Thanks, gents! Julie Ann from the SFReporter thought the pens were great on Friday, so that was nice.

Next for me is trying to get my online store set up before the giveaway happens so people can go there if they’re interested in my stuff, which is a lot less fun than time in the shop.
