Quick Starburst Clock Project

No revelations or other new ideas here, just posting a clock I recently completed.

Having limited shop time, usually I'll spend four or so weekends on the simpler projects. This one was done in three.

Clock is 12" outside diameter, face area is 9-1/2". Frame is 1-1/2" thick.

The face is more laser work with some added kerf compensation for a bit tighter fit of all the pieces (still have a touch more to go).
1/4" lauan plywood, veneered with the face and on the back with QS anigre. Hour markers are pyramid tipped walnut.

The starburst is mahogany and QS anigre. Dark area is ipe, inner ring is pommele eucalyptus. Outer ring is curly sycamore.
The frame is walnut.

I made the frame as two octagon rings layered together for strength. Plenty of exposed sap wood so I gave it a light dying with TransTint dark mission brown I had handy.

The circle was created on the router table with a simple circle jig, back recess is 1" deep and 10" diameter. To sit flush with a wall, that 1" is needed to fully recess the clock motor.

Question:
Does anyone just hate the hands I used (too pretentious?) I have one other brass simpler set, black just doesn't show up.

Answer:
SWMBO has spoken and issued the edict. Change the @!$%& hands.

I humbly obliged

Thanks for dropping in!

That is sweet, from the compass to the edge. Looking at it I thought it was done with segments and not veneers. Well done.

Very cool Splint!  Very well done, great design!

Mike

Nice looking clock there splint, sort of greene and greene style with added bling.
Thanks fellows!

Eric, I could do the compass with segments, but once it came to the curves I'd just run away. It's a lot like "crafts day" in early grade school with the construction paper, tasty Elmers paste, and the bastard left handed scissors 😀
Interesting design, well done.

Ron

Scissors that don't cut paper.

And have the round "safety tips" in case some kid starts running or gets stabby.

I can still remember the smell/taste of that paste, mmmmm.
I remember the smell of the airplane glue, and lacquer from doing model airplanes when I was a little older. Still like the smell of lacquer.

Nice looking clock - I like your choice of woods.
Thanks Steve!

Eric, shows your brain is still 100%.

Smells are the top long term memories, Too bad now that all models probably are of EV origins only and all the glue/finish has to be vegetable/water based...

I'm still into Hoppe's and Goop hand cleaner. (bus station diesel is also a good one)
Nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Your job is always too accurate.. You should nicely misalign 6,7,8 so people can sleep more. Great job!

No name noobie here

Thanks YRTi, perhaps that is exactly what I need to do 😀
It’s hard to match the compliments of the others. Your becoming a great Marquetry man. It looks  pretty perfect to me.

I was going to take your advice about the Aqua Fill. That stuff is expensive man. I used thin crazy glue instead and it worked great. I didn’t sniff it like you a Eric would have.

What type of laser do you use, and how do you prevent the thin pieces of wood from burning?

The hands look great. Did you try black? I  like your what ever clock. Was that a quick one also?

I'm still on my first pint, goes a long way for the small stuff. The CG sounds promising, but I always get my fingers stuck to my face.

Sure, but did you taste?

Diode laser. A 10W (optical power) at 40%. Even a small one will cut veneer.

I tape the veneer to a glass sheet, the laser doesn't burn the glass side then and the top (with air assist blowing across) also doesn't burn. The cut edges can be cleaned up easily with light sanding.

I have a bunch of black hands, but the hour hand disappears with the dark Ipe behind it.

I  like your what ever clock. Was that a quick one also?
Sure was, just a quick image search on the Google and a screen snapshot, upload, and Bob may be your uncle 😀
sweet looking clock splint, and swmbo was right about the hands !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nicely done, Splint! I’d be tempted to make it 13 segments around, but the math gets too complicated. ;-P

May you have the day you deserve!

I humbly agree Pottz. Wives are always on top of the fashion scene (" you're not going to wear that are you?")

You could cut it on your lathe Dave! Talk to Eric, he enjoys segments! 😀
