Well another veneering/laser experiment is going out the door.
I did a blog-style writeup on the build here but messed up the blog entry format, close 'nuff I suppose.
Stands about 7" high, 5" wide.
The glass vase insert (WallyWorld) is just incase someone thinks they can just fill the thing with water directly (Ya never know 🙂)
Walnut legs are slightly curved and inserted into the corners with a "W" type joinery.
This arrangement allows for some margin where the inside frame corners meet.
Some beveling on the interface
Panels are framed with cherry which will turn much redder once the sun gets to it (based on the color of the piece I cut up).
Cat parts were cut from four different veneers based on a pattern provided by LBD. I need to be more careful as some of the combinations are a bit meh.
Outer matting is Tamo ash.
Curly sycamore/pomele eucalyptus (my favorite of the four)
Pomele eucalyptus/mystery wood
Marble walnut/curly sycamore
Last is marble walnut/mystery wood (no photo)
Finish is oil on the cherry frame and legs, satin poly everywhere.
Should make some cat lover happy with a vase/pencil box that doesn't claw up the furniture 😱

Very nice. You cut the veneers with a X-acto knife? I would have really butchered that part. Every time I try that the veneer cracks, splits or breaks.
Scrappile, I "cheated" and cut it all with a laser. I am still trying to master cutting straight edges on veneer with the usual knives and saws, also have the crack 'n' split issues 🤔
Great piece Splinter. My daughter would love this piece. I like how you reversed the light dark woods on the design and the corner parts are your signature touch to box building.
Flowers will look nice in the vase in the box.
YRTi fractions can be confusing to the easy world of metrics. Just find the common denominator. Sounds easy doesn’t Splinter?8^}
