Ten Years in the Shop
I was doing some sharpening today and realized that this marquetry covered box had been my sharpening station for nearly ten years.
As it has never been posted here I thought I might put it forward as a testament to how well marquetry can stand up to regular shop use.
I built this little setup back when I did my first planes (which have their own marquetry storage box). It is just a simple plywood box with grooves to hold my abrasive film covered glass plates and a little spot in the end for a sharpening aid. Both boxes and their contents are still in the shop, in good nick, and sitting side by side after all this time.

Wow, Paul! Youāve got me thinking I should upgrade my storage box game. I still get a frisson when I find a hardwood āscrapā that will make a nice lid to put on my otherwise plain pine boxes.

I often think I should make someĀ containers and or boxes for the storage of tools and oddments.Ā But I never seem to get round to it, being carried away with the next project, so they go back on a shoe box.Ā It's elegant and functional - the work of a 'complete craftsman'.

maybe the next one you can make a little wider so the sticker fits on the front.Ā ;)
I like going back and seeing some of the older things I made.Ā It's always eye opening to see them and say to myself,Ā why did I do it like this or that?? Also to see how they fared for the years.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

To be perfectly honest I donāt remember but with those mitred corners it is certainly possible and likely that I veneered before assembly. Itās much easier to press that way and I never hammer veneer marquetry.
