The building of the tail vise is not an easy accomplishment. I started to build the vise when I was invaded by the daughter and grand kids carving pumpkins, what a fantastic distraction
,
I was needing some time off to think about how I was going to do this. No instructions came with the screw assembly from Lee Valley, and their are probibally a hundred different ways to do it.
I decided to build a chop that would travel along a track with the screw passing thru it just off centre.
The chop will contain a dog hole, and the top will be getting holes to match. I used some Purple Heart to decorate the vise with.
It still has to be trimmed to size slightly and sanded but this is the mock up.
More to follow on the vise later, but if anyone has any questions, just ask. Thank you for following along.

Thanks pat. I don’t have enough left but I would love to use Purple Heart to encircle each of the plane block holes…I may do just a few yet. I have a second screw for a tail vise.

That’s a nice distraction indeed! We will be doing the same this weekend:)
I like the purple heat decoration. It breaks monotony.

That reminds me a lot of my wagon vices, even the purpleheart, except for the screw / wedge difference. Are you able to remove the wagon easily?
I was very pleased last week that I built that feature into mine when I spilled glue on that area of the bench.
You are building a real beauty there. I’ll bet you can’t wait to start working with it rather than on it.
The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.
Thanks ship. Yes it is all removable the screw and wagon anyways. You have a much finer detail in Purple Heart than I do, is yours inlay? I have used inlay in a tea box before but nothing of that scale. I lover your bench, and yes I can’t wait to start using mine. I have said at least a dozen time I wish it was done to make this easier to do…lol

Yes it’s inlay. Your bench is much finer than mine. Mine is an imposter made of plywood.

You guys are jerks! Don’t you know I have so many things to do that I can’t waste my time daydreaming about wagon vices and other such nonsense? Really inconsiderate of you all. ;-) LOL
Seriously, I have a very expensive hunk of white oak that will become an almost-as-beautiful wagon vice one day. She is also daydreaming about that. But boring framing and drywall work must come first. :-( Why does it never seem to end?
