This is part 1 in a 2 part series: Crafsman style floor lamp build

  1. Intro: 'ello, 'ello, 'ello, what's all this then?
  2. Those funky blocks

Some time back I made a floor lamp project and at the time I also made two shades since it is easier to knock a few out versus just singles with all the required setups.
Time to put that extra shade to use!

The original lamp linked above:

Since I wrote a blog (over on the "other" site) about making the shade, I figured I should do the same for the lamp base/column.

I settled on a more efficient process for the shades that saved a lot of my time and grief. For this base I'm thinking of ways to ease its construction.

The column from the base pad to the top cap is 60". Taper goes from ~2" top to 6" bottom measured from the inside of the struts.

There are three "blocks" that help keep the wiggle under control, top, bottom, and intermediate, and caps plus veneer to pimp things out a bit.

The base pad is stacks of mitered frames and the struts are squares of wood with some corner detailing.

Copper pipes hide the wiring and provide another place to collect dust and spider webs for the owner. I do try to keep people busy!

Anyway, the following parts are the general process and ways I explore build methods to make it easier that the previous version.
Wow!!!  That is over the top!

Wow! That's a neat lamp. Thanks for the two writeups! Looks very interesting.
Very nice work on the lamp Splint, looks real nice.
I'm looking forward to this. Thanks for putting in the time to share it with us.
