Restoration of an 1897 railroad car. #6: Picking up where I left off and an excuse!

Needed a better picture for the first pic, the next one maybe not the best intro :-)

I have been extremely distracted of late. I got an unwelcome cancer diagnosis, so that took priority. Surgery was done on May 23’rd and again on August 2’nd. The second one was done to make sure they got it all. Looks like this

I go back for a final follow up next Thursday but the pathology came back all clear!

Now, back to Coach 56. This is its current status.

All the major brace elements are fitted and in place. Next up the 2x4 wall joists need to be made. They are built in pairs and form the columns between the windows. You can see them in the above photo but on either side of the big opening.

The guys started milling the beams that are at window sill level and also at the top of the window wall. These beams form a goodly portion of the horizontal side wall structure.

That’s it for now. I’m limited to lifting no more than ten pounds for the time being so I stop into the shop for Tuesday’s Beer O’Clock and check in with the guys and answer any questions. Needless to say I’m going bat shit, oh well. Later.

Oh my! Take care, OF, and get well!

Don't anthropomorphize your handplanes. They hate it when you do that. - OldTools Archive -

I wish you a speedy recovery.  Good to hear that the report was good.
Will put you in my prayers.
Wow, glad you have a positive outcome!

Really see a difference in the "new" wood versus the old growth original!
So sorry to hear about this.  Please get well soon.

Glad you’re doing ok, Kevin!

Just look at the difference in the growth rings between the old part and the newly milled parts. Yow!

May you have the day you deserve!

Yup, 1897 vs 2024!

Damn! Glad you’re doing ok. Listen to the docs! Train looks great too.

Progress is good on both fronts, but dang Kev, hopefully that's the only brush with the cancer for you

Take care of yourself Kevin. You've got lots more railroad cars to take care of.

It's good to hear you are on the mend! Thanks for the update of the railroad car.

About listening to doctors: I got injured several years ago. A few weeks after I went into the doctor to check up on my progress. He said I was having an amazing recovery. Then he looked at me carefully and asked "Did you do what I told you?" I said yes and his reply was "That explains it. Nobody does that."
Amazing what usually happens when you listen to actual experts…not that all docs are experts…someone has to finish last in the class!

Thanks every one.
Mos, this was my second event. First was a melanoma, made me hyper aware. Since I had what I thought was a cyst on my back, so asked the dermatologist to give a referral for a surgeon. The rest is history!
