Dust collection boom arm 2.0

here is the old boom arm that i made several years ago. it served me well but it had limitations.

so i decided to do an upgrade. i used rocklers rolling track system. the track comes in 48" lengths which i used 1 full plus a 36" piece that i cut to size. the arm is made from 1/2" osb with the top and bottom made from doug fir. all glued and screwed together. it's pretty heavy at around 40lbs. which is why i cut out the holes to cut as much weight as possible. at first i hung is with just two strap hinges but that made me nervous so i added the angled piece with two more hinges. it rock solid now. the hose that hangs connected to the sander is from rocklers dust right system. the arm is 81" long so it will reach anywhere on the table. believe it or not but i hung this thing alone ! just took some creativity. this one should out last me hopefully.

Crazy cool!

WIsh I had a beam near my sanding area for something like that. I'll have to think about some form of table mounted socket for a main pole.

You really should paint that top beam steel grey, and add rivet heads. Total industrial look.
thanks splint. i tell ya a boom makes sanding so much easier without cords or hoses dragging over the table.

Nice Pottz, I agree with Splinter. Steel grey will look nice!

Slick idea there. instead of painting it grey just use a piece of steel.
it too damn heavy now !

Looks like a nice setup bud!
Nice change Pottz,
Looks like it should work a lot better now.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

thanks guys. yeah i think it's gonna be a lot better than the old one that was locked to the end of the arm.

Interesting idea.  I've got to come up with something creative like that for an overarm dust collector on my table saw. Your beam idea might be a start.  Plus if I can get double duty (yep double duty) out of it for sanding then that's a big bonus.
i looked at a bunch on you tube, most were poorly made. there was one big one that the guy could swing 360 degrees around his shop to cover everything. i had an over arm on my table saw before and didn't like it. always in the way so it rarely got used. but YMMV !

Nice!  Whatever makes sanding easier is good!
Great build Pottzy! I wanted to do something like that (and still might) but I ended up coiling the hose around a couple arms suspended from the ceiling joists. Since it’s pretty much right above my sanding area, it works out ok! I’ve got a retractable electric reel next to it and a metal guide also suspended from the joist, so it keeps both power and vacuum mostly out of the way. It’s a little limiting on larger projects, since you either have a bit too much or a bit too little hose available since it’s only adjustable in about 3 foot lengths, but it is nice having it all above you and out from under your feet!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Outstanding....I saw something similar in a magazine, looked useful.  Looks well made and a great idea.
