I have wanted to build a Kayak for some time now, and I finally have a shop that I can build in. I have spent a few years reading up on boat building and have purchased a handful of books for reference. In those books are a few that have been written by "Nick Schade" who has been a Naval Architect and has designed a number of Kayaks over the years, his plans can be purchased through Chesapeake Light Craft.
There are other online companies that sell plans for not just Kayaks but larger boats. I have spent hours going through a number of those sites, just did not find anything that appealed to me. The books of "Schade" has a few plans in them and the lines looked good. So that is what I have ended up with for a build, in a Striped Planked Style.
This is going to be a long process here, and I will add chapters as I get further along in the build. I have no idea what I am getting into as for the time this will take.

Thanks Steve. Yes, it does. I struggled yesterday with the Lofting, finally that light bulb went off. I was making it harder than what is actually is.
I'm not sure how long this is going to take, I would like to say around 500 hours, but I may be a hundred off either way. Nice thing is, I'm Retired.

Definitely following this one Eric! Should be a really great project for a retired fella. Maybe I can tackle a boat in 20 years or so...
Kenny, thanks. A good project for sure, and I will be able to get out on the water in a different way and enjoy nature. It would be neat to take down a river, but to many rapids up to Class III around here. So, I think I will stick to the Lakes.

Yeah I have spent years on our rivers in a kayak fishing for smallmouth here and there's no way I'd take a wooden one on the majority of those floats. It would be a lake boat for me for sure.
This is an adventure that should bring a lot of new skills to you, making it all the more interesting & fun to do. Stick with it and you'll experience the gratification of learning and accomplishment.

With a kayak you pretty much have to get your feet wet. It’s above the knees you want to keep dry.
i will tell story we decide to rent a pontoon one vacation at beach i was doing fine till i hit a sand barge so i jumped out was only 3 inch deep started to push boat off sand while my mom gave it gas before i knew it i was hanging off edge of boat 🤣
