What to use to make a rattle rattle?

Got some new neighbors in the ’hood who are expecting a baby before Christmas. Figured I could make a nice wooden rattle to give to the little spud. Better than a drum for the new parents, I figure…

Anyway, what’s the preferred material to make a rattle rattle? I’ve got lots of smallish scraps of wood. Also steel and brass. Or rocks from the driveway. What should I use?

Thanks!

I think Jim Jakosh has been using steel ball bearings?

Maybe dried beans, non toxic if they ever escaped.

I think "bb" sized shot would sound more "soft" than larger bearings, but I dunno what kids like.
You could use Mexican jumping beans for a self powered unit!
Only thing I can see is having the rattly material well sealed so the kids don't eat it.
yeah jim has made many.

I used the smallest bolts and nuts from my inventory. They were a lot louder than the dried beans I used on my first set. I also made the walls a bit thinner.

Rattlesnake rattles 😁
Nah, dried pinto beans for the NM style rattle.
Peyote seeds??? 😲

Good idea.

Captured rings

Popcorn, black peppercorns, and tiny nuts and bolts are my top three possibles at the moment, I think. I’ve got two octagonal rings of cherry glued up on a faceplate, and a backup dumbbell-shaped blank if the rings prove too complex for me.

Captured rings on a bigger ring would be a neat trick, Mos. You first?

Oh, I also considered buckshot or birdshot, but all I have is lead, which might not be ideal for a little spud what tries to eat everything in reach, which is, as I recall, the baby modus operandum.

If I was going to use anything metal, I would probably use stainless steel (like these do).  You could also find some beads.  Heck, go to Jackalope and buy cheap bag of of beads used for making jewelry.

I think that maracas sometimes use wood beads.  Of course they are usually much larger.  Wood pieces do not necessarily need to be round so you could just cut off pieces of a dowel or any strip of wood for that matter.

10-24 nuts were about the right size for the dumbbell-shaped rattle. Black peppercorns will go in the larger ring, or maybe small pieces of 10-24 bolts (I have a nice bolt-cutter from a previous project). The small octagonal ring was too small for me to (successfully) turn a cavity in it, so I’ll try again using solid wood rather than a segmented design for that next time, and start a bit bigger.

Stainless is an interesting idea, but much harder to work, and my local hardware store didn’t have any small bearings, regardless of the material, so I’m improvising.

Regular BBs are copper plated steel.
Not the many pounds of BBs I have. All lead, suitable for melting down in a beer can.

Also, decided against stainless, because I want something magnetic in case the kid eats it. We can make it swallow one of those magnets we used to feed our cattle after they ate nails or other metallic junk from the pasture.

Just don't use anything with sharp edges. No need for a magnet because the kid doesn't a rumen, reticulum or omason. Anything else the kid eats will pass in 12 to 24 hours. 😜

True but internal magnets are handy for hanging them on the fridge when you have your hands full.

Or hanging stuff on the kid… take this hammer over there to Duck, kid. [clank]

I say lead shot, but that’s just me
