I bet Bentlyj has done something like this.

I didn’t look it up, but those hinges look pricey.

Ron - guessing you are right on cost of specialty hardware.  Don't know the budget or much of the details.  Just searching Google has me wishing my house was full of hidden doors!  Some of these are really neat (and about invisible).  

One guy that might of done something like that is Bently 

I made nightstands, the top slides out to reveal a compartment.  I used a "tot Lock that I can release with a magswitch from behind the cabinet.  Whish their was more "pro" versions of of locks that can hold but be released with a strong magnet.  There are youtubes you can find if search "hidden in plain sight".. Q-Line safeguard shelving is a good example.
