Cold Frame

I wanted a cold frame to start some plants in, this spring … back to growing some of my food, “just in case”.

We had some old windows kicking spring and some leftover wood from our deck build.
I said “I’d like a cold frame.”
Rick said, “yes, dear.”
And voila.

I have plants started in it, now, and the goal is to have a winter harvest of carrots next year. Never done that before so we will see how that turns out.
Actually, I have never used a cold frame before … so fingers are already crossed.

Dimensions? I’m … about that long and that wide :)

Debbie,

Wishing you loads of success with your cold frame. Keep us posted on how it’s working for you.

That’s something we’ve discussed in the past but just never did it. We had a glass door that we were going to use but gave it instead to a brother-in-law. For now the plants (actually seeds that haven’t yet come up) are on the kitchen table in the workshop with a grow light over them. Once the plants start, we’ll move them to a workbench on wheels in the garage that can be moved into the sun on good weather days.

Thanks for sharing.

I meant to ask on the Cold Frame #2 post what the roofline was like over this part of the house. Guttered eaves or beneath a peak? Here it is the 22nd of April and we are getting snowfall. We’ve had the typical ‘April showers’ in between the cold snaps, along with enough wind to pull a flag out from it wall mount. I’m curious, now, as to whether the glass panes could withstand Mother Nature in my locale? Any of these a concern in your area?

the second one is pretty protected on three sides.

The first one is more open.

We’ve had some nasty weather – but not a heavy snow.
For winter, we plan on putting a hoop house over it. We hope that any snow falling off the roof will hit the hoop house plastic, which will break the fall from the glass.

We are also fortunate that the glass windows that we are using is really heavy duty. (Just the little window in #2 is a lighter window glass.)
