Gibson Box

I wanted to make a surprise gift for a friend at my work. His passion outside of work is music, in much the same way that many of ours is woodworking. I checked out his music web site and saw some pictures of a Gibson Les Paul.

I printed a drawing of the guitar that I found on line, and used is as a basis for this box. I also printed my friend's musical moniker, "mez," from his site so that I could personalize the box.

The body is maple. The lid is maple also, but with a touch of birdseye. The "knobs" are made from birch dowels. The stub of a neck, which serves as an easy way to lift the lid, is made from bloodwood. There is dark green felt on the bottom of the cavity, but it doesn't show up well in the photo.

The finish is Danish oil and wax. The dimensions are about 9" X 7" X 2".

What an awesome gift!!
That's great Chuck,
Nice surprise,  I'm sure he loved it.
Nice work.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

very cool chuck, something only a true friend would do. im sure he appreciated it very much !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Chuck, that is awesome!  I play too, have several Les Paul style guitars....none a Gibson, however....That is super creative.  Les Paul's have a huge following and most of the owners are obsessed with them...that "shape" is used a lot...like Hard Rock Cafe's, for instance.  That box had to mean a lot to him....and it's great place to store stuff to "accompany" his guitars.  The bloodwood accents take it over the top....Very Well done!
