This is part 1 in a 2 part series: Techniques & Tricks

  1. Homemade veneer softener
  2. Punched metal decoration

I needed some veneer softener, so I went looking on the Internet and I found this recipe at Highland Woodworking. Perfect, but my local pharmacy doesn’t stock glycerine, and I didn’t want to waste my morning running to town. I came up with the following, and it seems to work pretty well.

  • 95 ml warm water
  • 100 ml denatured alcohol
  • 5 ml Astroglide gel (it’s about 40% glycerine, 58% water, and other stuff)
  • 5 ml protein-based glue (hide glue, fish glue, etc)

Seems to work pretty well.

May you have the day you deserve!

astroglide not just for sex LOL 👍

*TONY ** Reinholds* ALWAYS REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN

I love this type of info Dave.

I made my own softener that used Propylene Glycol as the residual. Used for keytosis in cattle, I was able to score a gallon from the local farm supply for dirt cheap.
It makes more than just people slippery, Tony.

Glad to help, Splint! I knew there was some organic chemical in there, but until I went looking, I wasn’t sure what I needed. But the pharmacy opens at 9, and the hardware store doesn’t open until 10, so that chose my approach.

May you have the day you deserve!

If it works, problem solved. Nice one ...
