Both the Vinegar, and the Simple Green as a follow up are both very low on the caustic scale, and neither will do irreparable harm. I find Simple Green is a wonderful cleaner if it isn't just rust, but any good cleaner can do the same, and you probably have something you like, already at home. Personally I start with Vinegar if I want rust to go away, sometimes that gets you to a point you are good to go. Not a "wire" brush, but I start with a nylon one, as stiff as you can find, but know Harbor Freight has a set of different sizes and materials, but you can buy some singles on Amazon. Then a half a ton of elbow grease and it should be purty again. Best of luck. I tried one of them years ago, and for me they were not as effective as other methods. But I suppose they exist because they work well for others, or maybe in situations I was never in?

In Blood and Gore, Patrick is very high on this plane, my time with one was years before I ever saw or met Patrick, and probably due to my poor exposure I have remained without one. That said my overall plane use is way down as I have been corrupted by electron sizzling power tools, laughs an evil sounding laugh, uh, sorry I get that way. :-)

Which reminds me once again, I need to get busy selling off all the many hand tools I never use anymore. Maybe not, but seems to be tons of the stuff, just laying around.
