Around the shop #1: New web site

I decided to start a new website for the Hand Plane information I’ve gathered over the years.

Comments and suggestions welcome. I’m not much of a web site designer/programmer, so any help is appreciated.

timetestedtools.com.

thanks

That’s a resource that should be promoted here.

Hey Don,
Just brainstorming here…
Since I know this website intricately, I was wondering how to make this even more easy to navigate. I see the headers for Stanley, Sargent, but not other brand specific planes. I know that would make the header too busy to add all of those there, so…

Let me pick Sargent, I bet you didn’t see THAT coming ;-). How about a “separate” page set aside ONLY for links to specific pages:

  • planes by # — #407, #408, #5400, etc.
  • a link just for Sargent frogs
  • a link for castings
  • a link for cutters
  • a link to a TYPE comparison of each of the above

The way I look at this, is that you already have all of this information posted somewhere on the site. This “new” page would only help folks navigate more quickly to where their interest is taking them.

What I do NOT know… Can you have a link that will take you 1/2 or 2/3 down a given posted page? I know much of what you have is a long uninterrupted list/page of your finds and restores, so I was wondering if a link could take me to a particular one/project/plane on that page? Or do we have to scroll down each time, to find our target?

Bottom line is that I am jealous of what you are doing Don, because I have been way too lazy to attempt this. So I am suggesting what I can to make this as easy as possible to navigate before the growing database overwhelms the current layout.

thanks Brian and Mike.
An index page is on my to-do list Mike. I’m having trouble figuring out how to make a page and not have it show up in the navigation pain. I may have to create my own navigation and let the index page be the overall.

In HTML I know you can link to a tag on a page. It may take some work to tag them all, but I may get bored enough someday, if I can figure out exactly how.

I’ve been trying to find a better way to get the type information across.

I may need a better web site builder tool.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming.

Hi Don,
I’ll be checking this site out when I get some time to get back to my hand tools. You are definitely my go-to resource.
Are you writing your own HTML? There are more user friendly programs out there. I did my site with a program called Serif X5 (or 6) and it was very easy to learn. It’s all drag and drop and the program writes all the HTML.

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

The pictures look great!
The layout is appealing and the fonts used easy to read.
I did see a rendering issue in IE11
