I like the concept. Hardwood has the grain that likes to deflect the punch and this seems like it would minimize that effect along with the placement accuracy.
A "V" groove makes sense for those trying to set a divot for a hand crank drill cross hole in their carbide shanked router bits.
Could see small embedded magnets for use on steel, but might make fine position adjustments difficult with the stiction
