As for burning, if it was being stained dark and not painted, I'd leave the burns....It's near impossible to clean the ends of fluting without effing them up. Especially if they're not thumb nailed.
The only reliable way to prevent the burning is with a shaper and sharp knives....you've seen it yourself. No comparison in the quality of the cut of a shaper vs a router.
You probably traded yours for Nascar tickets though...didn't you? 🤔
