4' Pencil Well

This is another item for a Swap. A 4' Pencil Well, made from Cherry and Maple, stands 5-1/2" and 3-1/2" diameter. A really fun project to create.

Started by milling up the Cherry stock needed and glued strips of maple to both sides of half of them.

Then cut all of the wedges with a wedgie sled I had made up a while back. I also had to cut all of the vertical pieces of Maple. I sanded each piece to endure all of the fuzzies were removed, then it was time to sit down and glue up all of the rings.

Once the rings had set, I sanded each face on the disk sander, then glued them up in pairs first, ensuring I had the correct offset. Then glued up the pairs.

A note on the base block, I only glued have of the wedges together at first then sanded the face of each before gluing them together.

Before gluing the stack of rings to the base, I placed the 3/4" Maple base on the lathe and cut in a mortise. After that had set for a bit, it was time to chuck it up to the lathe with a piece of plywood and the live center. and turned the exterior. Once I had it rounded, I then moved on to the inside, and thinned it down to about 1/4" or so.

Sanded everything in stages up to 320 inside and out. The inside was a little bit different, ended up using a 1" dowel with a slit cut in the end and created a flap wheel (sort of) but it worked.

The finish was Danish Oil followed with Howard's Feed and Wax, buffed out.

For the feet I clamped it in the bench, laid out the feet and cut away the waste. Then using a small chisel pared away the excess smoothing it to the side using small files.

Overall very happy with the finished project, I will need to make a second one for myself now.

Thanks for looking and comments are always welcome and appreciated.

This looks very nice. Makes me think woven basket.
Buck, thanks. That is one way of looking at it. I was going for a brick wall.

Turned out great (oh, what a terrible pun).  Really like the design.
Barb, thanks. Funny pun. I need to try these again.

That pattern is cool.  You usually see it with a darker main wood but I really like the affect with the lighter cherry.

--Nathan, TX. Hire the lazy man. He may not do as much work but that's because he will find a better way.

Nathan, thanks. The Cherry should darken up after sitting in the sun for a while. Ryan said it's on his bench filling up quickly.

I was the happy recipient of this piece. Very nicely done. Clean and very visually appealing. It’s on the bench, holding pencils, needle files and rifflers. Thanks Eric!!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice, Eric!

May you have the day you deserve!

This one is easily my favorite! well done!

Ryan, thanks. I figured you would find a use for it, may want to let it get some sun to darken that cherry.

Dave, thanks. I had fun with this one.

Yrti, thanks. sounds like you need to get yourself a lathe and jump down the rabbit hole.

Ivan, thanks. Yes, lots of work, but they are fun and the results show.

OldTool, thanks. I found something like it on Pinterest and said I need to give this a try.

Mike, thanks. I need to make one for myself now.

*TONY ** Reinholds* ALWAYS REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN

Tony, thanks. You should give it a try, they are a lot of work but use less lumber and fun to make.

I LOVE that pattern Eric!  Definitely saving this one to come back to one day 😁
Gr8 job.

No Bees. No Honey. Bees Lives Matter

Kenny, thanks. Fairly easy to do, I used the hose clamps to get tight fitting joints. The ring was figured out without the little verticals, so it ended up a tib bit large diameter. I may make another one using Wenge, have a few large boards on the loft, and drops.

Brian, thanks. It looks cool in the hand.

A four foot pencil wall is a huuge wall… ;-)

Incredible attention to detail, beautiful work! I’m in awe. Really.
